council house kid with a true desire to make the world a better place for everyone
I have run my own Market Research business for the last 12 years, specialising in social research, including work on Food Insecurity for the Food Standards Agency, work for charities ranging from WWT and Battersea to Crisis and RNIB. I try to focus on doing work that makes the world a better place rather than selling things that aren’t really needed.
I grew up in an Irish family, my mum was a hospital cleaner and care assistant and my dad came over as a navvy in the 60’s facing the signs “No blacks, No Irish, No dogs”. They gave me a strong sense of social justice and a hard work ethic.
We were lucky enough to be given decent council housing and I got a free university education which has given my family a platform to build a better life for ourselves. I am painfully aware that this isn’t something my neighbours here in Peckham in 2023 have the opportunity to enjoy. I want to work to change this, I care passionately about housing and raising our standard of living.
Supporting local communities
One of my proudest achievements is that in 2020 I co-founded Nunhead Knocks, a community support group during Covid. We raised thousands to help support our community, ensuring those in need had fresh food.
We utilised hundreds of volunteers delivering prescriptions and shopping to those isolating. We ran a food bank from our community centre and delivered hot meals and filtered volunteers to other community groups that needed support.
Helping neighbours through the cost of living crisis
In 2022, Nunhead Knocks pivoted to offering small community grants through the cost of living crisis, we believe that those in our community should not be forced to choose between eating and heating. Over winter wegave £50 grants for food or fuel to our neighbours in SE15. As of 4th January 2022 we have fundraised nearly £20k and administered the full amount in £50 grants and delivered 13,000 leaflets to get the word out.
If I achieve nothing else in my life, I’ll always be immensely proud of the work I’ve done with Nunhead Knocks.
Supporting local communities
I’m a committed community activist in Peckham. I admin a local community forum called Nunhead Rocks, and it’s the forum Nunhead Knocks was born from.
We collected to support Grenfell in the aftermath of the fire there. I’ve also raised over £7k for Guys and St Thomas’s Cancer Centre to thank them for saving my life.
I’ve been involved in Plastic Free Peckham, helped run a community choir, am a shareholder in the Ivyhouse community pub in SE15 and set up Nunhead Women’s Institute where we campaigned against micro plastics and loneliness.
